For the Side Barrier test, vehicles are engaged in a simulated intersection collision between a vehicle and moving barrier at 35.5 mph. The Side Pole Barrier test simulates a crash between a moving vehicle and a fixed object like a tree or utility pole:

The NHTSA’s Rollover Resistance test measures the probability of rollover in a scenario where the driver loses control without involving another vehicle. The rating is based on Static Stability Factor, a measurement that determines how “top-heavy” a vehicle is. In other words, a higher SSF indicates that a vehicle is more likely to tip over during an abrupt maneuver while driving.
