The History of GMC and General Motors

The history behind who makes GMC has a lot to do with GMC’s parent company, General Motors. Take a look at the brief timeline below for how GMC and General Motors came together to bring premium, capable trucks to the automotive market:

  • Rapid Motor Company was founded by Max Grabowsky in 1902, developing some of the very first pickup trucks the world had ever seen.
  • Seven years later, General Motors acquired Rapid Motor Company in 1909, making way for the General Motors Truck Company (GMC).
  • GMC debuted its first mass-produced truck in 1912, selling over 22,000 models.
  • GMC became a leading provider of trucks to the U.S. Military during WWII,  manufacturing over 600,000 trucks to aid in the war effort.

When General Motors eventually picked up Chevrolet as an additional subsidiary, many parts for both trucks began being manufactured by the same companies. That’s not to say that GMC trucks and Chevy trucks are the same- on the contrary, General Motors has worked to build GMC as a more luxury truck brand, offering more premium features than any of the Chevrolet models.
